The CrossFit Games is the proving grounds of the world's fittest athletes. Jet City CrossFit, my family owned south Seattle gym of 40 members, had the honor of taking part in the biggest and best CrossFit Games to date. Having earned our spot through the previous two qualification stages, we were determined to embrace the experience and leave with everything out on the field.
It has the feel of a battle ground or a gladiator's stadium. We walk out from underneath the stadium to a roaring crowd, bloodthirsty and ready for action. "Introducing, from Seattle Washington, Jet City CrossFit!" We hear in the background our fans yelling "JET JET JET JET JET" over the din and clamour of the crowd. In the 85 degree sun there were shivers going up and down my spine. In spite of that, I was beaming. I couldn't help it. I felt like a champion. I cannot speak for my teammates, but this was one of the most powerfully invigorating experiences of my life.
We got to enter in like this not once, but 5 times! There were 5 events covering the first two days of competition. Only the top 6 teams made it to the final day. At the end of the second day, we were in 26th place. We played the spectator role on the final day, along with the 38 other teams that didn't make the cut.
I had the pleasure and honor of being both coach and athlete at my gym in Seattle. I helped bring my teammates to the games, and then got to compete along side them. I'd been to the first three Games at the ranch in Aromas, CA, and had seen how the competitive pool got stronger a thousand fold each year. Simply being at the games was an incredible feat in my mind.
In the 3 and a half months leading up to the Games, from the time of the first qualification challenge, Team Jet City grew in strength, stature, and friendship. We could not have done it without the others. We all knew we were invaluable, and this drew us together.
I'm so proud of us, "The Little Gym That Could."
